TESTIMONIALS
What our students and parents have to say......

Jill Wade (Adult Class, 8 Kyu Yellow Belt)
Makeda Yohannes (Youth Class, 2nd Kyu Brown Belt)

My daughter has been taking Karate for 2  1/2 years now
and I have watched her skills and discipline for the sport   improve. She is totally devoted to Karate, almost never
misses a class and helps with the younger children.
I think it has helped her become very a self-assured.
Jill and Makeda
I started taking the Adult class this year and since I am totally uncoordinated,
it took me a few classes before I stopped looking like a complete idiot. I am enjoying myself and I think my coordination has improved.

Sensei Eric,
I just wanted to share with you and Shigako how great it has been to be a part of the karate program at the YMCA.
I am impressed with the level of knowledge and skill you both possess and am honored to be training with you.
Andrea Baxter (Adult Class, 5Kyu Blue Belt)
Loren Case (Youth Class)

One of my most rewarding experiences has been watching my daughter learn, grow and compete with her karate.  As a very small child she watched me take karate classes.  She was very excited to start to karate herself when she became old enough.  I searched for the proper instructors and karate school.  I feel very fortunate that I found the Shito-ryu Shukokai Mid-County Dojo.
Trey Miller (Adult Class, 6Kyu Green Belt)
It is apparent you both really enjoy teaching as I observe the interaction in the junior classes (when I am there early).  This is confirmed again in how many parents want to talk and interact with you after class, and the nice comments they have. I am not sure they know your level of skill or background, but if they did would be even more honored to have their children in your dojo.

I did not know what to expect from the karate program when I started (as in most new situations) but as I have studied a little about the history of Shukokai and your background, it seems I am in the right place.
Sincerely
The instructors have the temperament and talent to work with children and
adults.  I have watched many of the children (including my daughter) develop
confidence, coordination, strength and the ability to focus.  I have watched many
of the adults develop these same qualities, including my self when I  joined the
Mid-County Dojo.

The right Dojo is important.  I recently watched my daughter compete at her first
karate tournament.  She had so much confidence and was having fun at the
same time.  I felt so much pride in her and her accomplishments. I was
reassured to know that I found the best in Shito-ryu Shukokai Mid-County Dojo.

I could go on for pages about how karate has changed me, but I won't.  Karate is fun, it helps you stay fit and builds muscles.
I have become much more self disciplined, and focused now.  Also I am slightly more limber.  Karate is a great way to get fit, learn how
to protect yourself and have fun at the same time.  - Alex Jackson, 13

Both of my children, Alex and Gabrielle have been working with Sensei Tomlinson for approximately 2 years.  Alex has substantially
increased his awareness of where his body is in relation to others since working with Sensei Eric Tomlinson at karate.
This is especially important because Alex, now 13 years old, is growing very quickly.  Alex's ability to sit still and pay attention began to
improve after just six weeks in the Shito-ryu Shukokai Karate Do Union.  Before, he was fidgety and couldn't sit in one place for any
  amount of time.
Sensei Tomlinson truly loves his discipline and his guidance with children shows an understanding of their limitations, yet he still
demands performance at the highest levels.  He is encouraging, yet firm and strives to promote the discipline learned in karate in to all
  levels of the student's life.

Gabrielle is 5 years younger than her brother and began karate just as she turned 6 years old.  Karate has given her a great sense of
confidence in dealing with her brother and other boys her age.  She asserts herself more readily with her older brother and reports
enjoying playing with boys her own age.  Gabrielle has tried soccer, baseball, and basketball.  None of these sports compare to her
enthusiasm for karate.  Sensei Tomlinson promotes just the right balance of fun and hard work for her age group.  This has been an over-
whelmingly positive experience.  The checklist for her daily responsibilities at home reinforces the intiatives that I have tried to instill.

Karate has been an avenue that provides a positive experience that carries both of my children through the less positive aspects
of their lives.  Thank you for all of your loving guidance and attention to my family.

  Sincerely,
  Lisa E. Burrows ( Alex and Gabrielle's mother )

We have discovered this past year that Karate can provide a positive, disciplined way for children to not only develop physically, but to also develop in their maturity.
Sensei Eric Tomlinson and Shigako Tomlinson who teach our sons Jake (9) and Ben (7) karate
provide a positive atmosphere for kids to grow in the sport and mature as people.

Our kids have not only embraced the key values of their dojo - respect, effort, patience, creativity, and temperance - but also enjoy a fun and interactive training environment.

When we signed our kids up for karate, it was really based solely on their interest in the sport and that we love our YMCA, where the classes are held.  We've been very fortunate to see them develop into better athletes under Sensei's leadership, which any sport or karate dojo could provide.  But even more important is how Jake and Ben continue to grow into being better

people.  We've seen them become more respectful, disciplined people at class and at home.  It has been a real joy for us to see them
embrace karate at the Shito Ryu Shukokai dojo here in St. Louis.  It has become "our" family's dojo, too.
If the kids keep hounding us to join them, we might even try it out some day.

I am currently taking Karate with my
eleven years old daughter Camille.
She wanted me to come train with her,
which surprised me.  I used to do Judo as
a child, but nothing like it since.
I've coached a girl's running team for the past two years.

Camille has progressed to the green belt.
I'm still a beginner, and she likes being more advanced than me, and giving me pointers.  Karate has become the highlight of our week, and certainly of Friday.  Instead of falling onto the couch exhausted after a long work week, we now put on our gi and do Karate.

It energizes us and we always want to do more.  It's also great to be able to share this with my daughter at a critical age, and hopefully into the future.

Although I have been with Shito-ryu Shukokai
Mid-County for just under 6 months, I have had an excellent and pleasant experience, thanks to the outstanding work and constant motivation of Sensei Eric Tomlinson
BEN MAMOUN
and all of the instructors at Shito-ryu Shukokai Mid-county.  They don't only teach you the art of Shito-ryu, but they also instill on you balance, self-discipline, and confidence.  It is a pleasure to be part of such a great school.

Thank you for such a wonderful experience learning karate.  Both my son, Liam and I have learned much
and we are looking forward to Nora, my 4 year-old daughter starting classes next session.

Liam finds the classes fun and appreciates the genuine feedback that he gets every week.  Thank you for
taking an interest not only in his practice of karate but in his schooling and home life.  He talk about you
often and takes to heart reminders to be responsible cleaning his room and doing his best at school.

I have also learned many skills I can apply outside of the dojo.  As a parent and a supervisor, I appreciate
the teaching model you both provide.  You show great patience in demonstrating and reteaching skills.
I am reminded of how much care and time it takes to pay enough attention to give helpful feedback to someone who is learning a new skill.  Your thoughtful input has improved my karate and serves as a model of the kind of supervisor and parent I aspire to be.

Thank you for working with my whole family to make learning karate such a positive experience.  When I started I never realized how much I would learn and in how many ways I would be both challenged and
supported.

Sincerely,
Caroline Mitchell
